MN NLG Presents at Immigration Detention Conference
On June 27, 2007, the Maria Iñamagua Campaign for Justice co-sponsored and presented at the ACLU Conference on Human Rights and Immigration Detention in Chicago, Illinois. Guild members have played a key role in founding and supporting the demand for justice for Maria who died from lack of appropriate medical attention while in custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the Ramsey County Jail.NLG Steering Committee member, Tovah Flygare, presented on the Campaign’s progress in securing recognition of the neglect and injustices faced by Ms. Iñamagua and other detainees in the Ramsey County Jail and the need for justice for all under international human rights rubric. The presentation and updates on our Campaign were well received and we made several contacts in the course of the conference, from the Chicago police monitoring group (connected with the Twin Cities’ Communities United Against Police Brutality [CUAPB]), to the New York groups advocating for local community monitoring of ICE detention facilities. We were also able to advertise for the Minnesota NLG co-sponsored Committee for Elimination of Racial Discrimination Shadow Report training upcoming on September 21, 2007. This event will be hosted by the University of Minnesota Law School and will include a local panel of presenters including CUAPB and Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights.
