The Minnesota chapter of the National Lawyers Guild is an activist legal/bar association working within Minnesota and the surrounding region. Our membership includes attorneys, legal workers, jailhouse lawyers and law students. We partner with four local student chapters of the National Lawyers Guild at Hamline Law School, St. Thomas Law School, the University of Minnesota Law School, and William Mitchell College of Law. Currently our major areas of work include providing legal support for a wide range of local activists, preparing for the 2008 Republican National Convention, immigrant rights organizing and legal support, and working to apply international human rights treaties to local struggles. We are also active in the anti-war movement and the local Coalition for Palestinian Rights. Over the past couple of years alone, we have
- worked in coalition with many activist organizations to fight back the Minnesota version of the U.S.A. P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act and other legislation detrimental to civil rights and civil liberties
- provided legal observing and mass defense services to activists on a regular basis
- fought for the rights of immigrants through drivers' license rule litigation, legislation, community organizing, and ordinance campaigns
- provided legal, organizing, and political education to the legal and non-legal community alike, through CLEs, public forums, presentations at high schools and universities, and community and organizational events
- taken part in and supported civil rights litigation in Minnesota and around the country
The NLG has been going strong since 1937, and is the only legal organization in the country - including the American Bar Association and even the American Civil Liberties Union - to refuse to require loyalty oaths from its members during the McCarty era. That spirit is still with us, and stronger than ever. If you love your country, you're tired of watching our political and justice systems turned into tools of oppression against the People, and are looking for a way to join the fight for human rights with a group of like-minded attorneys, students, and legal workers, come check out the Guild and its projects through the national organization's website, or contact us or come to one of our events to see what sort of trouble we're causing today.
